Majesty's Consuls General at hanghai and Nanking (see

enclosures Nos. 2 and 3) and also of the joint Note

(enclosure No.4). This demarche had no doubt a good effect,

and the crisis has now apparently passed away, partly per) -

haps as the milt of the failure, so far, of Parliament to

establish itself at Shanghai.

Intermittent hostilities contime in the South

and West, and have now also broken out in Funan. In

Kuangt ung Sun Yat-sen has not yet succeeded in quetling

the resistance of Ch'en Chiung-ming and his forces. In

Pukien Amoy has been thrown into confusion by an attempt

on the part of a portion of the flet to recover that

centre in Northern interests, an incident which forms the

subject of a separate despatch. In Szechuan the tide of

war between the provincial Kuo Min Tang party and the

omposing faction supported by the 'ei-fu ebbs and flows,

As reported in my despatch No. 451 of the 15th instant the

Treaty port of Chungking was for a time besieged by Kuei-

chow forces who suddenly changed Bides and attacked the

troops of Yang Sen, Tu P'ei-fu's nominee. They wore even-

tually driven off and the war now contimes intermittently

along the land and river routes between Chungking and

Cheggtu.
